Magazine Ad Critique

These three designs show the Great, Good and Bad magazine advertisements. The first one being the best showing exciting composition, color schemes, and a alarming eye catching style involving more of a photo. The second design shows an alright advertisement showing good use of color, unique photo and fine type face composition. Not as eye catching but executed well, just not too creative. The last advertisement shows poor composition, confusing type face choices and colors that shouldn't be on top of others.

So these next three express a theme of bad hierarchy or type face based issues in magazines. The first one, personally I do enjoy this font, but the spacing is what throws everything off. The hierarchy for the first one is bold, and simple, nothing great but nothing to confusing. The second one, using a similar font but with worse spacing, shows a gross example of hierarchy downfall. You get confused from reading the boldest text, leaving the viewer over stimulated, then you read the next bold font above on the right and you are bored. It goes directly from a 100 to a 10. Nothing original and is complicated. The last one, being a magazine front, it has to many similar colors, a complex level of different fonts and the focus doesn't have any direction.

These ads represent great, good and bad website advertisements that transitioned from magazine ads. So the first one shows a great well known News Source website and the ad is mostly an understood picture, showing good composition and color focus. The font is big enough to read but not distracting in an annoyance way from the photo. The second one is one I see a lot is an youtube, or video ad. This is something thats new compared to a news paper, but its a short, touch sensitive ad that forces you to go to it and click to remove or if interested. These are the most annoying, but are quick. But once you see them a lot you start to remember what the information is. It's a good tactic but lacking in design or importance to the viewers video. The last ad showing online is similar to a catalog. Having a hierarchy with lots of levels is quite distracting, a good use in color of font, but doesn't matter due to the number of fonts. The composition is very busy and the word "free" is used too many times, leaving the viewer confused on importance.
