Harper's Magazine Research

1. How does communication design work within the constraints of print and media?

The constraints of print and media deal with your audience and who they are. Lots of media outlets deal with a younger audience like though Instagram or a website ad on tumblr. While other media outlets like Facebook are more adult oriented. Print constraints have to deal with color themed ads and have to consider what type of paper it will be printed on. These all will manipulate how the designer will want to convey their design.

2. How does the creative process relate to strategic problem solving?

The creative process must solve the problem of who is this for, why is the product the answer, and how will the product be perceived. The creative process will give color ideas, font ideas, and concept art to answer these problems.

3. How is the creative process related to the design process?

The creative process will shape the direction of the design process. The creative part always needs to be first because it will shape why the design process is doing what it’s doing. It goes from concept to actual visual representation.

4. What are the critical phases of the design process?

The Critical phases of the design process start with brainstorming, then goes to thumbnails then rough drafts. You use each element to snow ball into the next activity to create a more finalized product.

5. How does project research help to define a communication problem?

Project research is one the most important steps to being a successful and clear designer to your audience. It will answer the questions involving who your client is and who is the concept is for. It clears up worry or unclear decisions on where the project must go next.

6. What are some examples of brainstorming techniques that generate multiple concepts based on a common message?

Concept mapping is a skill to start broad then pinpoint which idea will go in the direction you want to. Another example of brain storming is reaching inspirations and taking notes on what works for certain audiences and what doesn’t work for certain audiences.

7. How does using a metaphoric device generate concepts?

A metaphoric device generates concepts because it makes a box you have to work in. It creates restrictions that help shape a concept into an idea that’s for reality.

8. How do concepts translate into messages within a visual form?

Concepts translate into a visual form with messages by going through tests and trials critiqued by a team. Personally, it helps to get a lot of opinions on a concept or visual design because you catch things others might not, or others might catch things you didn’t. A message in visual form is finalized through lots of metaphorical walls sculpting a masterpiece that can fit into a category for a specific audience. Everything with a message must be intentional- that is what all this editing and process is for.

Questions:

1) Each Harper magazine that was involved in these seven deadly sins campaign was very vague yet inviting. The magazine solved the communication problem by giving minimal information with bold statement and a specific photo to each sin. My research has shown me that these advertisements used a sinful idea to get people’s attention for something that could or could not be a bad thing. But the ad makes the product the focus of sin (cool aspect) or the opposite of sin (answer aspect)

2) I found these specific ads above to show where I want to head with my concept. Absolut Vodka is a very bold brand that I always look up when I think of simple yet affective advertisements. The ones above show some from the seven deadly sins- envy and wrath. Each shows a certain type of their bottle and their classic Bold Helvetica Font. The other ads I chose to show is a retro cigarette ad with a grotesque yet inviting slogan, and the other is a simple and bold Harper Magazine ad. I want to implement an ad for confident bold women who want to make men KNOW they are in control.

3) My idea will start out as an illustration. A simple yet alarming scene that will catch people’s attention, but then leave them with a ‘gasp’ because of the implication.
